NB: The links have broken since I changed domains for this site. Once I have the time and access to a suitable machine, I’ll re-do these keymaps and republish them.
Until then, ignore the contents of this page.
If you have one of Apple’s lovely keyboards, but have to use it in the Windows operating system, you may end up being frustrated by the different keymappings to those labelled on the keys. The Apple keyboard is closer to the US English and International English layouts with its UK layout.
I have developed a little archive which will (hopefully) make life a lot easier for someone using, say, Boot Camp, or for a person who’s using an Apple Keyboard with Windows.
You can download it here. The file is a 7-Zip package which will expand into a temporary directory, and then run the setup program.
The layout was created with Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (an excellent power toy which I highly recommend) and packaged with 7-Zip.
Questions
Is there a Dvorak version?
Sadly, no. I may do one in the future, as both Mac OS X and Windows are sadly lacking in localised and internationalised Dvorak variants.
Do I need the Apple keyboard to install this package?
No. You do, on the other hand, need Windows 2000 or a later version of Windows (this includes the server distributions, and Windows 7). You will also need Administrator privileges.
There’s something wrong with it!
Then tell me and I’ll fix it.
How do I get a hash (#) sign on the UK Apple keyboard?
On Mac OS X, press Option and 3. On Windows and most Linux distributions, you need to use the right Alt (AltGr) key and 3 to get the hash,
I still have the non-Apple layout!
You need to switch to it in the Keyboard control panel.
